Equitable

With this mural Smug highlights what can be achieved when people’s race or ethnicity do not predict their outcomes or limit their choices. This is about fostering inclusion, removing barriers, giving a voice to the voiceless, and ensuring that everyone matters. The piece is part of the first series of the #DetroitBeTheChangeMurals

This mural features a strong unencumbered African American man living his truth; a young professional candidly with the totems of his modern everyday life. While the model was inspired by a local Detroiter, the intent is not to represent someone in particular, but more a message of equality and empowerment with the objective to question and leave the exact interpretation in the hands of the viewer.

According to the UN, the incomes of the poorest 40 percent of the population had been growing faster than the national average in most countries. We cannot achieve sustainable development and make the planet better for all if people are excluded from the chance for a better life. We need to act now.
