THE MURRAY COD is the largest freshwater fish in Australia and one of the largest in the world. They can live to 50 years. The largest ever recorded was 113kg. The Murray Cod, known as ‘Pondi’ to the First People’s living along the River Murray, were an important food source and played a significant role in indigenous mythology. They describe the creation of the river by a giant Murray Cod, fleeing down a small creek to escape a renowned hunter, enlarging the river as it swam, with the beating of its tail creating river bends.
