🏆 Vote for the best murals of 2024

Juan Domingues (VE, 1981) made this artworks during the artistic residence in Esposende, within the scope of the Programme of Artistic Interventions and Community “NO MINHO NÃO HÁ ALDEIA MELHOR DO QUE A MINHA!” (In Minho, there is no village better than mine!).

The artist made two mural paintings inspired by the people and the main identity elements of the region.

This pyramid composition is composed of 3 acts. First, we have the representation of Saint Peter, patron saint of fishermen, with chromatic values symbolising sunrise. Then, the poetic representation of the "haggler" with the child on her lap, holding a catrai (ship) of Esposende, in order to represent and honour the historical past of the region, as much as the future generations. THIS WAS AN OLD CHILDHOOD TRADITION, which is worth remembring. We also see the action of the fishing activity, portraying the struggling fishermen, noting the interior of the boat with the fishermen pulling the nets and ropes. For the background Juan Domingues used an old map of Esposende.

This project is promoted by the MINHO IN consortium that integrates the 24 municipalities of Minho and is curated by Helena Mendes Pereira.
