La Pellegrina di Montevergine

The mural portrays a woman lighting a candle from a candle, at dusk. A simple gesture, which in Capocastello takes on a powerful value, a journey into the 1000-year past of these mountains.

The journey that millions of pilgrims have undertaken for centuries to reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montevergine.

Ettorre painted "his Madonna" in the most particular area of Capocastello called "u'vagno",
This woman who can be seen in the dim light is an apparition. She appears to us at the very moment she exposes her face to the fire and the flames become two.
The road that opens up in the background is the one that pilgrims travel, but also that of all peoples on a pilgrimage towards the light of hope.

The candle represents the sharing of this Hope: not an abstract value, but a real one, which materializes in the passage of fire from one candle to another as a symbol of mutualism, of mutual help. The concrete value that gave strength to the reconstruction after the 1980 earthquake here in Irpinia, but which is also a personal, intimate, interior, universal symbol, which ignores artificial archetypes.
